Hervey Bay Beach

Hervey Bay is the fastest growing tourist destination on the Queensland coast. Its fantastic sheltered position inside of Fraser Island and its regular visits from thousands of humpback whales have seen tourist numbers increasing in droves. As Australia has increased in popularity as an international tourist destination foreign travelers have been seeking out new and beautiful places to visit once they have seen the Great Barrier Reef, Ayres Rock and the Sydney Opera House. For this reason places like the Fraser Coast have been included in international travel brochuring and interest in this region has been sparked overseas. Hervey Bay has been one of those destinations that has benefited from this increase in interest.

On the domestic travel market, Hervey Bay has been at the forefront of the whale watching industry. In the late 1980’s recovering whale populations started calling into the calm waters of the bay as a part of their annual migration. Several entrepreneurial charter boat owners started taking passengers out to see them and the rest is history. Hervey Bay now has a fleet of twelve modern charter boats that operate daily trips into the new marine park where the whales gather and it is now known as the whale watching capital of the world.

Since that time, property developers have targeted Hervey Bay and built a number of new resorts to provide accommodation for the influx of visitors. These are mostly scattered along the Hervey Bay esplanade, on the beachfront or close to the Urangan boat harbour. These are mostly four star standard and are all apartment style resorts. Hervey Bays boat harbour is about to get an $800 million dollar upgrade to cater for increased tourist growth in the Fraser Coast area. Hervey Bay also has a great supply of restaurants and cafes that cater for the tourist influx.

Hervey Bay also has a growing bare boat charter industry as it lies at the northern end of the Great Sandy Straits. This beautiful waterway is the protected channel that runs between Fraser island and the mainland and provides a huge cruising ground that extends from Tin Can Bay in the south, all the way through to Hervey Bay. Fishing charters, kayak tours and camel rides on the beach are all part of the Hervey Bay tourist scene.
